MARPOLVerträge, or MARPOL Conventions, refers to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1973 and brought into force in 1983. It is the principal international agreement aimed at preventing and combating pollution of the marine environment by ships. MARPOL is a technical convention that covers the prevention of pollution by oil, noxious liquid substances in bulk, harmful substances in packaged form, sewage, garbage, and air pollution.
