M60s

The M60 is an American-made 7.62x51mm NATO caliber general-purpose machine gun. Developed by the Springfield Armory, it entered service with the United States military in 1959. The M60 was designed as a replacement for the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and the M1919 Browning machine gun. Its development was influenced by the German FG 42 and the M1919 Browning machine gun.

The M60 is gas-operated and air-cooled, featuring a rotating bolt for locking. It can be fired from a bipod, a tripod, or mounted on vehicles and aircraft. The weapon is fed by disintegrating metallic links, typically from a 100 or 200-round ammunition belt. Its effective range is approximately 1,100 meters. The M60 has a cyclic rate of fire of around 500 to 600 rounds per minute.

Over its service life, the M60 has undergone several modifications and variants, including the M60E1, M60E2, M60E3, and M60E4. These upgrades aimed to improve reliability, ergonomics, and ease of maintenance. The M60 served extensively in the Vietnam War and subsequent conflicts. While largely replaced by the M240 in many U.S. military roles, the M60 remains in service with various countries and in some specialized U.S. military applications. Its robust design and .30 caliber ammunition have made it a widely recognized and utilized machine gun.
