Méréstolerancia, often translated as measurement tolerance, refers to the permissible range of variation in a manufactured part or product. It is a crucial concept in manufacturing and engineering, ensuring that interchangeable parts can be produced reliably and function correctly. When a dimension is specified, it is typically accompanied by a tolerance, indicating the acceptable upper and lower limits for that dimension. For example, a shaft might be specified as 10mm ±0.1mm. This means that any shaft measuring between 9.9mm and 10.1mm is considered acceptable.

Tolerances are established based on several factors, including the intended function of the part, the manufacturing process capabilities, and economic considerations. Achieving very tight tolerances often requires more precise and expensive manufacturing methods, while looser tolerances can be produced more cost-effectively. The choice of tolerance directly impacts the assembly of components. For instance, in an interference fit, where two parts are designed to be press-fitted together, the tolerances of both parts must be carefully controlled to ensure the desired interference is achieved.

The concept of tolerance is also fundamental to quality control. Inspection processes use measuring instruments to verify that manufactured parts fall within their specified tolerance limits. Parts that fall outside these limits are considered defective and are typically rejected or reworked. Statistical process control (SPC) is often employed to monitor manufacturing processes and ensure they are operating within their capabilities to consistently produce parts within the desired tolerances.
