Lümfisõlmedeni

Lümfisõlmedeni, often referred to as lymph nodes, are small, bean-shaped organs that are part of the lymphatic system. This system plays a crucial role in the body's immune defense and fluid balance. Lümfisõlmedeni are found throughout the body, commonly clustered in areas such as the neck, armpits, and groin. They are connected by a network of lymphatic vessels that transport lymph fluid.

The primary function of lümfisõlmedeni is to filter lymph fluid, which is a clear to yellowish fluid that circulates throughout the body, collecting waste products, bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances from tissues. Within the lümfisõlmedeni, specialized white blood cells, such as lymphocytes and macrophages, are present. These cells identify and destroy harmful pathogens. When the body encounters an infection or inflammation, lümfisõlmedeni can become enlarged and tender as they work to fight off the invaders. This swelling is a common sign that the immune system is actively engaged.

In addition to their immune function, lümfisõlmedeni also contribute to maintaining the body's fluid balance by returning excess fluid from tissues back into the bloodstream. Diseases can affect lümfisõlmedeni, including infections, inflammatory conditions, and cancer.
