In some cases, individuals may experience phantosmia, which is the perception of smells that are not actually present.

The causes of lõhnahäiretega are diverse. Viral infections, particularly upper respiratory infections like the common cold or flu, are a frequent culprit. Head injuries can also damage the olfactory nerves or the brain regions responsible for processing smell. Certain medical conditions such as nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis, allergies, and neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease can contribute to olfactory dysfunction. Exposure to certain toxins or medications can also impair the sense of smell.

It can affect a person's enjoyment of food, their ability to detect danger (like smoke or gas leaks), and their social interactions. Diagnosis typically involves a detailed medical history, physical examination of the nose and throat, and specific smell tests. For some causes, the condition may be permanent.
