Légoszlopokban

Légoszlopokban, meaning "in air columns," refers to a phenomenon observed in certain atmospheric conditions. It describes a visual distortion where objects appear to be floating or suspended in the air. This effect is primarily caused by variations in air density, which can refract light. When light passes through layers of air with different temperatures and densities, it bends. If these layers are arranged in a specific way, the light from distant objects can be bent upwards towards the observer, creating the illusion of the object being elevated.

This optical phenomenon is most commonly associated with temperature inversions, where a layer of warmer air sits above cooler air near the ground. The boundary between these air layers can act like a lens. Historically, légoszlopokban has been observed at sea and over land, often leading to sailors reporting phantom islands or ships appearing to float. While it has a similar basis to mirages, légoszlopokban specifically refers to the upward bending of light that makes objects seem to rise from their actual positions. It is a natural optical illusion that requires specific atmospheric conditions to manifest. The term is often used in contexts describing unusual atmospheric optics.
