Instead of providing a single precise value, a length interval indicates that the true length lies within a defined lower and upper bound. This is particularly important when dealing with measurements that have inherent uncertainty or when estimating parameters that represent a physical dimension.

In statistics, length intervals are often referred to as confidence intervals or prediction intervals. A confidence interval, for example, provides a range within which a population parameter is likely to fall with a certain level of confidence. If a length is estimated, a confidence interval might be given as "10.5 cm ± 0.2 cm," meaning the true length is estimated to be between 10.3 cm and 10.7 cm with a specified probability.

In physics and engineering, length intervals are used to account for the precision of measuring instruments and the variability of physical objects. For instance, the diameter of a manufactured part might be specified as 50 mm ± 0.1 mm, signifying that acceptable diameters range from 49.9 mm to 50.1 mm. This tolerance, represented by the interval, is crucial for ensuring proper fit and function in assembled systems. The width of the interval reflects the degree of precision required or achievable.
