Lågfrekvensbandet

Lågfrekvensbandet, often abbreviated as LF, refers to a specific range of radio frequencies. In international usage, the LF band typically spans from 30 kilohertz (kHz) to 300 kilohertz (kHz). This band is situated between the very low frequency (VLF) band and the medium frequency (MF) band.

Due to their relatively long wavelengths, LF waves exhibit good ground wave propagation characteristics. This means they can travel long distances along the surface of the Earth, often following the curvature of the planet. This property makes LF suitable for applications where reliable long-range communication is required, even over varied terrain.

Historically, LF has been utilized for various purposes. One prominent application was for longwave broadcasting, particularly in Europe, where it allowed for widespread radio transmission over large areas. Navigation systems also benefited from LF, with some early radio navigation aids operating within this band. Additionally, some forms of telegraphy and specialized communication systems have employed LF frequencies.

However, the LF band is not without its limitations. The available bandwidth within the LF spectrum is relatively narrow, which restricts the amount of information that can be transmitted. Furthermore, LF transmissions can be susceptible to atmospheric noise and interference. In modern times, many applications that once used LF have transitioned to higher frequency bands, such as HF, VHF, and UHF, which offer greater bandwidth and more advanced technologies. Despite this, certain niche applications and historical systems continue to operate within the low-frequency band.
