Länsrätter

Länsrätter were administrative courts in Sweden that existed until June 30, 2009. They were the first instance of administrative courts in the Swedish legal system, handling cases related to public law. The jurisdiction of the länsrätter covered a wide range of administrative matters, including tax disputes, social insurance issues, and decisions made by municipal authorities.

The establishment of länsrätter followed a reform in 1977 that reorganized the administrative court system. Prior to this, such cases were handled by different authorities, leading to a less unified approach. The länsrätter aimed to provide a more accessible and specialized forum for citizens and organizations to challenge administrative decisions. Their decisions could be appealed to the kammarrätter, which were the intermediate administrative courts.

In 2010, the länsrätter were abolished and replaced by administrative courts (förvaltningsrätter) as part of a larger restructuring of the Swedish court system. This reform aimed to modernize and streamline the handling of administrative cases. The new administrative courts inherited the responsibilities and jurisdiction of the former länsrätter, continuing to serve as the primary courts for administrative law matters in Sweden. The transition aimed to improve efficiency and consistency in the application of administrative law.
