Längsschnittliche, often translated as "longitudinal" or "cross-sectional," refers to a research design or perspective that examines data over a period of time. This contrasts with a cross-sectional study, which captures data at a single point in time. In a längsschnittliche approach, researchers collect information from the same subjects or units repeatedly at different intervals. This allows for the observation of changes, trends, and developments within individuals, groups, or phenomena as they evolve.

The primary advantage of a längsschnittliche design is its ability to establish temporal order, which is crucial for understanding cause-and-effect relationships. By observing how variables change together over time, researchers can infer that one variable might be influencing another.
