Ländryggskotorna

Ländryggskotorna refer to the lumbar vertebrae, the five bones that make up the lower part of the spine. Located in the lumbar region of the back, they are situated below the thoracic vertebrae and above the sacrum. These vertebrae are the largest and strongest in the vertebral column, designed to bear significant weight and withstand the stresses of movement and posture.

Each lumbar vertebra, numbered L1 through L5 from top to bottom, shares a similar anatomical structure. They typically consist of a vertebral body, which is a large, weight-bearing block, and a vertebral arch that encloses the spinal canal. Extending from the arch are various processes, including spinous processes that point backward and transverse processes that extend laterally, serving as attachment points for muscles and ligaments. The articular processes connect adjacent vertebrae, allowing for limited movement while maintaining spinal stability.

The lumbar spine's primary functions include providing structural support for the upper body, enabling bending and twisting movements, and protecting the spinal cord. Due to the significant loads they bear, the ländryggskotorna are susceptible to various conditions, such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis, which can lead to lower back pain and other neurological symptoms.
