Lämpööljylämmitys, also known as oil heating, is a heating system that utilizes fuel oil to generate heat. It is a common method for heating residential and commercial buildings, particularly in regions where natural gas infrastructure is not readily available or where oil has historically been a more accessible fuel source. The system typically comprises a storage tank for the fuel oil, an oil burner, a combustion chamber, a heat exchanger, and a distribution system, usually consisting of radiators or forced air ducts.

The process begins with the fuel oil being pumped from the storage tank to the oil burner. Inside the burner, the oil is atomized into a fine mist and mixed with air. This mixture is then ignited in the combustion chamber, producing hot gases. These hot gases pass through a heat exchanger, where they transfer their thermal energy to a circulating fluid, most commonly water. The heated water is then circulated through the building's heating system to radiators or forced air units, which release the heat into the rooms.

Lämpööljylämmitys systems are known for their ability to provide consistent and powerful heat, making them effective even in very cold climates. However, they also have drawbacks. The combustion process releases emissions, including carbon dioxide and other pollutants, contributing to air quality concerns and greenhouse gas effects.
