Lämpötunnistin, often translated as temperature sensor, is a device that measures temperature. These sensors are crucial components in a wide range of applications, from industrial processes to everyday consumer electronics. They work by detecting changes in physical properties that are directly related to temperature.

There are several common types of lämpötunnistimet. Thermocouples are formed by joining two dissimilar metals. When heated or cooled, a voltage is produced that is proportional to the temperature difference. Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) utilize the principle that the electrical resistance of a metal changes with temperature, typically increasing as temperature rises. Thermistors are a type of resistor whose resistance is highly dependent on temperature, often decreasing with increasing temperature (Negative Temperature Coefficient or NTC) or increasing with increasing temperature (Positive Temperature Coefficient or PTC). Infrared thermometers, or pyrometers, measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object, allowing for non-contact temperature measurement.

The choice of lämpötunnistin depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as the temperature range, accuracy needed, response time, and environmental conditions. They are fundamental to control systems, allowing for precise regulation of temperature in ovens, refrigerators, engines, and chemical reactors.
