Lämpöresistenssi, often translated as thermal resistance, is a property of a material or object that describes its opposition to the flow of heat. It is the inverse of thermal conductance. High thermal resistance means that the material is a good insulator and does not allow heat to pass through easily. Conversely, low thermal resistance indicates that the material is a good conductor of heat.

The concept of thermal resistance is analogous to electrical resistance, where a higher electrical resistance impedes the flow of electric current. In thermal resistance, it is the flow of heat energy that is impeded. It is a crucial parameter in many engineering applications, including building insulation, heat sinks for electronic components, and the design of thermal management systems.

The unit of thermal resistance is typically Kelvin per Watt (K/W) or degrees Celsius per Watt (°C/W). A higher K/W value signifies greater resistance to heat flow. For a homogeneous material, thermal resistance depends on its thermal conductivity, thickness, and the area through which heat is flowing.
