Lämpöliikkeet, or thermal motion of molecules, refer to the random kinetic energy possessed by particles in matter that exists at temperatures above absolute zero. Even in solids, atoms vibrate about their lattice positions; in liquids and gases these vibrations become more pronounced and cooperative, resulting in translational, rotational and vibrational motion. The intensity of these movements correlates directly with temperature: as thermal energy increases, particles move more vigorously, frictional forces rise, and the material’s internal energy grows.

In gases, the Knudsen equation describes how molecular speeds relate to temperature, while in liquids the Arrhenius equation can predict diffusion rates driven by thermal motion. Brownian motion, visible as the erratic path of tiny particles suspended in a fluid, provides a macroscopic demonstration of the underlying thermal activity of the surrounding molecules.

Thermal motion underpins many thermodynamic processes. For example, heat transfer by conduction occurs when molecules transfer kinetic energy through successive collisions, and convection arises when groups of particles rise or sink based on temperature-induced density differences. In kinetic theory, the pressure exerted by a gas in a container originates from the momentum transfer during elastic collisions between molecules and the walls, directly reflecting the average thermal speed.

The study of thermal motion bridges statistical mechanics with classical thermodynamics, offering quantitative explanations for macroscopic properties such as temperature, pressure, and entropy. Controlling or measuring thermal motion is essential in fields ranging from materials science and nanotechnology to climate modeling and biological systems, where even minute energy fluctuations can influence chemical reactions or structural stability.
