Lämpökovettuvista

Lämpökovettuvista, often translated as thermosetting plastics or thermosets, are a class of polymers that irreversibly harden when heated. This hardening process, known as curing, involves chemical cross-linking between the polymer chains. Unlike thermoplastics, which can be repeatedly melted and reshaped by heating, thermosets undergo a permanent change in their molecular structure during curing.

The curing process is typically initiated by heat, but can also be triggered by a catalyst or radiation. Once cured, thermosets become rigid and infusible, meaning they cannot be melted or softened by further heating without degrading. This inherent structural integrity makes them suitable for applications requiring high strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance.

Common examples of thermosetting plastics include epoxy resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins (bakelite), silicone resins, and polyester resins. These materials are widely used in various industries, such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and construction. Their applications range from adhesives, coatings, and electrical insulation to durable molded parts for demanding environments. The ability to form strong, permanent bonds makes them ideal for composite materials where they act as a matrix binding reinforcing fibers like glass or carbon.
