Lämpöjalostus, also known as thermal processing or heat treatment, refers to a group of processes used to alter the physical and chemical properties of materials, primarily metals and alloys, through controlled heating and cooling. The core principle involves exposing the material to specific temperatures for defined periods, followed by carefully managed cooling rates. This manipulation can significantly enhance properties such as hardness, strength, ductility, toughness, and resistance to wear or corrosion.

Common types of lämpöjalostus include annealing, which softens metals and relieves internal stresses; quenching, a rapid cooling process that hardens metals; and tempering, which reduces the brittleness introduced by quenching. Case hardening processes like carburizing or nitriding introduce a hard outer layer while maintaining a ductile core. The specific temperature, holding time, and cooling medium (air, oil, water, or molten salt) are critical parameters that determine the final microstructure and properties of the material.
