Lämmönvarastointimenetelmät, known in English as heat storage methods, refer to technologies and strategies designed to capture, store, and release thermal energy for later use. These methods are crucial for improving energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy sources, and enhancing the reliability of heating and cooling systems. The primary goal is to balance the intermittent nature of energy supply and demand.

There are three main categories of heat storage: sensible heat storage, latent heat storage, and thermochemical heat storage. Sensible heat storage involves changing the temperature of a storage medium without altering its phase. Common materials include water, rocks, and concrete. The amount of heat stored is directly proportional to the mass of the material, its specific heat capacity, and the temperature difference. Latent heat storage utilizes phase change materials (PCMs) that absorb or release significant amounts of energy when undergoing a phase transition, such as melting or solidifying. This allows for higher energy density storage at a nearly constant temperature. Thermochemical heat storage involves reversible chemical reactions. These methods offer the highest energy densities and long-term storage capabilities but are generally more complex and less mature than the other two types.

Applications for heat storage are diverse, ranging from large-scale district heating systems and industrial processes to residential heating and cooling. They play a vital role in utilizing solar thermal energy, waste heat recovery, and load shifting for electricity grids. Effective heat storage can reduce peak demand, lower energy costs, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Ongoing research focuses on improving the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability of various heat storage technologies.
