Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact. In solids, this occurs when vibrating particles collide with adjacent particles, passing kinetic energy along. Metals are excellent conductors due to their free electrons, which efficiently transport thermal energy. Conduction is significant in stationary fluids and solids.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, which can be liquids or gases. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating convection currents. This natural circulation effectively distributes heat. Forced convection occurs when an external force, like a fan or pump, enhances fluid movement and heat transfer.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium for heat transfer and can occur through a vacuum, such as the Sun's energy reaching Earth. All objects at temperatures above absolute zero emit thermal radiation. The rate of radiation depends on the object's temperature, surface properties, and the surrounding environment.

Understanding these heat transfer mechanisms is crucial for designing efficient heating and cooling systems, optimizing industrial processes, and developing advanced materials. Applications range from the operation of heat exchangers and engines to the insulation of buildings and the design of electronic devices.
