Lämmönjohtuminen, also known as thermal conduction, is a fundamental mode of heat transfer in physics. It describes the process by which thermal energy is transferred through a material or between materials in direct contact, without the bulk movement of the material itself. This occurs due to the collisions of particles, such as atoms, molecules, and electrons, within the substance.

In solids, heat is primarily transferred through lattice vibrations, where the kinetic energy of vibrating atoms is passed from one to another. In metals, free electrons also play a significant role in conduction, carrying kinetic energy as they move through the material. Liquids and gases also conduct heat, though generally less effectively than solids, due to less frequent and less organized particle collisions.

The rate of heat transfer by conduction is governed by Fourier's law of heat conduction, which states that the heat flux is proportional to the negative gradient of the temperature. The proportionality constant is known as the thermal conductivity of the material, a property that quantifies how well a substance conducts heat. Materials with high thermal conductivity, such as metals, are good conductors, while those with low thermal conductivity, such as insulators like Styrofoam or air, are poor conductors.
