Lähestymiskytkimet, also known as proximity sensors, are electronic devices designed to detect the presence of nearby objects without physical contact. They utilize various sensing technologies, including inductive, capacitive, photoelectric, and ultrasonic principles, to achieve this detection.

Inductive proximity sensors are commonly used for detecting metallic objects. They generate a magnetic field and sense changes in this field when a metal object enters its range. Capacitive proximity sensors can detect both metallic and non-metallic objects, as well as liquids and powders. They work by measuring changes in capacitance. Photoelectric proximity sensors use a beam of light, typically infrared or visible light, to detect objects. A sender emits the light, and a receiver detects its presence or absence, indicating an object's interruption. Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for the waves to reflect off an object and return to the sensor. This time-of-flight measurement allows for distance determination and object detection.

The output signal from a proximity sensor can be a simple on/off switch or a more complex analog signal indicating distance.
