Lágyagyhártya

Lágyagyhártya is a Hungarian term that translates to "soft brain membrane" or, more accurately in medical context, the pia mater. It is the innermost of the three meninges, the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The pia mater is a delicate, avascular layer that closely adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord, following all their contours and sulci.

This vital membrane is rich in blood vessels that nourish the brain tissue. It plays a crucial role in protecting the central nervous system by acting as a barrier against infection and injury. The pia mater, along with the arachnoid mater and the dura mater, forms the cerebrospinal fluid-filled subarachnoid space, which cushions the brain and spinal cord. Any inflammation or infection affecting the meninges, including the pia mater, is known as meningitis. The intricate vascularization of the pia mater makes it a significant component of the blood-brain barrier.
