Lynudladninger

Lynudladninger, commonly known as lightning strikes, are powerful natural electrical discharges that occur during thunderstorms. These events are the result of a buildup of static electricity within clouds. As water droplets and ice crystals collide and move within a storm cloud, they exchange electrons, creating areas of positive and negative charge. When the electrical potential difference between these charged regions becomes sufficiently large, the insulating capacity of the air breaks down, and a rapid discharge of electricity occurs.

There are two primary types of lightning: cloud-to-ground lightning and cloud-to-cloud lightning. Cloud-to-ground lightning is the most dangerous to life and property, as it travels from a negatively charged area in the cloud to the positively charged ground. Cloud-to-cloud lightning occurs between different parts of the same cloud or between different clouds. The visible flash of lightning is caused by the rapid heating and expansion of the air along the path of the electrical current. The accompanying thunder is the sound wave produced by this rapid expansion. Lightning strikes can cause fires, damage electrical equipment, and pose a significant risk to anyone outdoors.
