Lynmouth

Lynmouth is a village on the North Devon coast in England. It is situated at the confluence of the River Lyn and the West Lyn, where they meet the Bristol Channel. The village is divided into two parts: Lynmouth itself, located at the mouth of the river, and Lynton, a clifftop town situated about 150 metres above Lynmouth.

The village has a picturesque harbour which was built in the 19th century. Historically, Lynmouth was a small fishing village, but it later developed into a tourist destination. The dramatic natural setting, with steep hills and wooded valleys surrounding the village, has long been a draw for visitors.

Lynmouth is known for the devastating Lynmouth Flood of 1952. A severe storm caused a massive amount of rainfall in the surrounding Exmoor hills, leading to the Lyn River overflowing its banks. The resulting floodwaters, carrying debris, tore through the village, destroying many buildings and causing 34 fatalities.

Following the disaster, a significant reconstruction effort took place. The village was rebuilt with improved infrastructure and flood defences. Today, Lynmouth remains a popular holiday spot, attracting visitors who enjoy its coastal scenery, the nearby Valley of Rocks, and the cliff railway connecting Lynton and Lynmouth. The Lynmouth Pavilion, part of the National Trust, provides information about the area's natural history and the 1952 flood.
