Lyhentämät

One common type is an initialism, where the first letters of the words in a phrase are used, such as "jne." for "ja niin edelleen" (and so on). Another type is an acronym, where the initials are pronounced as a word, though this is less common in Finnish than in English. More often, Finnish lyhentämät are formed by taking the beginning of a word or phrase and adding a period to indicate it is a shortened form, such as "esim." for "esimerkiksi" (for example).

Lyhentämät are prevalent in everyday communication, including texting, informal writing, and even in more formal contexts like academic papers or official documents where they are well-established. Their use can vary by context and audience. While they aid in brevity, it's important to use them appropriately to ensure clarity and avoid confusion.
