Unlike banks, which are for-profit entities, credit unions are not-for-profit organizations. They were established in the United States in the early 20th century as a response to the lack of banking services for rural communities and immigrants. Credit unions operate on the principle of "people helping people," where members benefit from each other's financial strength.

Membership in a credit union is typically based on common bonds such as employment, residence, or membership in a specific organization. This shared bond fosters a sense of community and trust among members. Credit unions offer a wide range of financial services, including savings accounts, loans, and insurance products. They often provide better interest rates on savings and lower fees compared to traditional banks, as they are owned by their members and do not have shareholders to please.

Credit unions are regulated by federal and state authorities to ensure they operate fairly and transparently. They must adhere to strict guidelines regarding member deposits, loan practices, and financial reporting. In Finland, for example, credit unions are regulated by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority.

The cooperative nature of credit unions allows them to be more flexible and responsive to the needs of their members. They often prioritize community development and financial education, offering workshops and resources to help members manage their finances effectively. This focus on member education and community involvement sets credit unions apart from traditional banks.
