Lungkemi is a term that refers to chemical processes occurring within the lungs. These processes are vital for respiration, the biological mechanism by which an organism obtains oxygen from the air and releases carbon dioxide. The primary site of lungkemi is the alveoli, tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place. Here, oxygen from inhaled air diffuses across the thin alveolar membrane into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
