Lungfunktionsmetod, often translated as lung function testing or pulmonary function testing, refers to a variety of non-invasive tests used to assess how well the lungs work. These tests measure how much air a person can inhale and exhale, how quickly they can exhale, and how efficiently oxygen and carbon dioxide are transferred between the lungs and the bloodstream.

The most common lung function test is spirometry. During spirometry, a person breathes into a device called a spirometer. The spirometer records the volume of air inhaled and exhaled, and the rate at which it is exhaled. This data helps diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and interstitial lung disease.

Other lung function tests may include lung volume measurements, which determine the total amount of air the lungs can hold, and diffusion capacity testing, which assesses how well oxygen passes from the air in the lungs into the blood. These tests are crucial for evaluating the overall health of the respiratory system and guiding treatment decisions for patients with lung diseases. The results of lung function tests are interpreted by healthcare professionals to identify abnormalities and track the progression of lung conditions.
