It refers to a state of balance within a snowpack where the various layers and their properties are stable and unlikely to undergo significant changes. This equilibrium is influenced by factors such as temperature, moisture content, snow crystal structure, and the underlying terrain.

Achieving lumotasapidäntä is a dynamic process. Initially, freshly fallen snow may be unstable. However, as time passes and conditions fluctuate, the snowpack undergoes metamorphosis. This can involve processes like sintering, where snow crystals bond together, or melt-freeze cycles, which can create denser layers or ice formations. A stable snowpack, one that has reached a state of lumotasapidäntä, generally exhibits uniform properties throughout its depth and is less prone to sudden avalanches.
