Luminestsents is a term that can refer to luminescent materials or phenomena. Luminescence is the emission of light by a substance not resulting from heat. This is in contrast to incandescence, which is light emitted due to high temperature. There are several types of luminescence, distinguished by their energy source. Photoluminescence occurs when a substance absorbs photons and then re-emits them. This includes fluorescence, where the emission is immediate, and phosphorescence, where the emission is delayed, causing materials to glow in the dark after exposure to light. Electroluminescence is the generation of light in response to an electric current or field, commonly seen in LEDs. Chemiluminescence is light produced by a chemical reaction, such as in glow sticks. Bioluminescence is a type of chemiluminescence occurring in living organisms. Thermoluminescence is light emitted by a substance when it is heated, after it has previously absorbed energy. Triboluminescence is light produced when a material is mechanically stressed, rubbed, or broken. These light-emitting properties are utilized in various applications, from displays and lighting to sensors and medical imaging.
