Luftseite

Luftseite is a term used in German engineering to denote the side of a device, system, or component that comes into contact with air. It is contrasted with the Flüssigkeitsseite (liquid side) or, less commonly, the Gasseite, depending on the application. The Luftseite describes the pathway and the thermal or mass-transfer processes associated with air flowing through or over a component.

In fields such as heat exchangers, filtration, and ventilation, the Luftseite refers to the air flow path and its transfer characteristics. For example, in a plate heat exchanger that handles both air and another medium, the air side is the portion where air moves through channels; in filters and air-handling units, the air side comprises the surfaces and pores that contact the circulating air. The opposite side may carry water, oil, or another process medium.

Design considerations for the Luftseite differ from those for liquids because air has much lower density and viscosity, is compressible, and can contain moisture and particulates. Engineers specify metrics such as air-side heat transfer coefficients, pressure drop, moisture handling, and fouling tendency, as well as sealing, corrosion resistance, and thermal expansion constraints at the air interface.

The term is standard in German technical literature and is used in specifications for heat exchangers, filtration devices, air-conditioning equipment, and turbomachinery. See also Flüssigkeitsseite.
