Luftfartøydriv, also known as aviation fuel, is a specialized type of fuel developed for use in aircraft engines. It is distinct from fuels used in automobiles or other ground vehicles due to the stringent requirements for performance, safety, and reliability in aviation. The most common types of aviation fuel are aviation gasoline (avgas) and jet fuel.

Avgas is primarily used in piston-engine aircraft. It is similar in composition to automotive gasoline but with several key differences. Avgas has a higher octane rating to prevent engine knocking, a more stable boiling range to ensure consistent performance at varying altitudes, and additives to improve its suitability for aviation applications, such as the addition of tetraethyl lead (TEL) in many formulations, though lead-free alternatives are increasingly being developed and used.

Jet fuel, on the other hand, is used in turbine-engine aircraft, including commercial airliners and military jets. Jet fuel is a kerosene-based fuel. It is less volatile than avgas, which contributes to its safety. Two main categories of jet fuel exist: Jet A and Jet A-1. Jet A is primarily used in the United States, while Jet A-1 is more common internationally and has a lower freezing point, making it suitable for higher altitudes and colder climates. Military aircraft often use a specialized version called JP-8.

The production and distribution of luftfartøydriv are highly regulated by aviation authorities worldwide to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety. Contamination or improper fuel can lead to catastrophic engine failure, making fuel handling and quality control paramount in the aviation industry.
