Lubricantbetween is a term used to describe any lubricant placed between two contacting surfaces to reduce friction and wear by forming a separating film. In tribology and engineering, the concept emphasizes the role of a lubricant in maintaining smooth motion, reducing energy losses, and extending component life.

Common categories include mineral oil–based oils, synthetic oils (such as polyalphaolefins and esters), greases, water-based emulsions, and bio-based lubricants. Solid lubricants like graphite or molybdenum disulfide are used in high-temperature or vacuum environments where liquid lubricants are less effective. The choice depends on operating conditions, materials, and compatibility with seals and coatings.

Lubricant films operate through hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic, or boundary lubrication mechanisms, depending on speed, load, temperature, and viscosity. Other considerations are lubricity, pour point, flash point, and compatibility with seals and equipment.

Applications span automotive bearings and gears, industrial machinery, metal forming, and various consumer and aerospace components. Performance is assessed through standard tests for viscosity, wear, corrosion, and oxidation, guided by industry standards such as ASTM and ISO.
