Lubatavus

Lubatavus is a fictional genus created for worldbuilding and speculative biology. In its in-universe account, Lubatavus represents a small, eel-like marine vertebrate that inhabited shallow coastal seas during the late Cretaceous period. The genus and its species are used to illustrate patterns of early ray-finned fish diversification in a temperate archipelago setting.

In this fictional taxonomy, Lubatavus is placed within the class Actinopterygii, in the fictional family Lubatavidae and the order Lubatiformes. The designation is explicitly non-authentic and used only within the constructed world.

The genus includes two described species: Lubatavus elongatus, with a slender, elongated body, and Lubatavus maculatus, which shows dorsal spotting. Adult specimens are described as reaching 40–60 cm in length, with a continuous dorsal fin and a light, silvery scale cover. A lateral line system and a modest jaw structure are noted in the fossil record.

Fossils attributed to Lubatavus are said to come from deltaic and shelf deposits of a fictional western Tethys region, indicating a shallow coastal habitat. The diet is hypothesized to consist of small crustaceans and larval fishes. Reproduction is not described in surviving material, leaving aspects of their life cycle open to interpretation within the story world.

The name Lubatavus is constructed for the worldbuilding project, with etymology loosely inspired by Latin roots resembling “swift swimmer.” As a fictional construct, Lubatavus has no recognized status outside the narrative and appears in community wikis and collaborative stories as an example of early teleost diversification in a hypothetical ecosystem.
