Lowosmolaritású refers to a solution that has a lower osmolarity than another solution, typically a biological fluid like blood plasma. Osmolarity is a measure of the concentration of solute particles in a solution. In medical contexts, low osmolarity solutions are often used in intravenous (IV) fluid therapy. These solutions can help to dilute the body's fluids or provide hydration without causing significant shifts in electrolyte balance. For example, dextrose 5% in water (D5W) is considered a hypotonic solution, meaning it has a lower osmolarity than blood plasma. When administered, it can distribute throughout the extracellular and intracellular fluid compartments. This property makes low osmolarity solutions useful for managing certain types of dehydration or when a patient requires fluid resuscitation without the risk of hypernatremia. However, the use of low osmolarity solutions must be carefully monitored to avoid complications such as hyponatremia, which is a dangerously low level of sodium in the blood.
