Loodusmärgid

The term loodusmärgid refers to nature monuments in Estonia, a legal designation used to protect individual natural features of special scientific, aesthetic, or cultural value. These monuments include rock formations, glacial erratics, glacial lakes, ancient trees, caves, and other geological or ecological structures that are considered worthy of preservation. Loodusmärgid are listed by the Ministry of Environment and are protected under the Estonian Nature Conservation Act. The designation imposes restrictions on development, access, and activities that might damage the natural feature, while still allowing for educational and scientific use.

The process for establishing a loodusmärgi involves a scientific assessment, public consultation, and formal registration. Once a feature is designated, it gains legal protection that prevents alteration, removal, or exploitation. Management of loodusmärgid is carried out by local municipalities or national nature reserves, and information about each monument is recorded in the national database. The aim is to preserve unique natural heritage and enhance public awareness of Estonia’s diverse landscape. Examples of well-known loodusmärgid include the Männikonna stone circle, the Värska cave system, and the Haapsalu cliff face, each serving as an educational resource and a site for responsible recreation.
