Lome

Lomé is the capital and largest city of Togo, located on the Gulf of Guinea in the southern part of the country. It functions as the political, economic, and cultural center of Togo and hosts most government ministries, foreign missions, and major institutions.

Geography and climate: The city lies on the Atlantic coast near the Lomé Lagoon, with flat plains inland. Lomé has a tropical climate with a distinct rainy season and a dry season influenced by trade winds known as the Harmattan, resulting in generally warm temperatures year round.

Economy and transport: Lomé is the country’s primary port and commercial hub. The Port of Lomé handles container and bulk cargo and serves neighboring landlocked countries. Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport provides international connections. The city also hosts markets such as the Grand Marché and serves as the center for commerce and services.

History and demographics: Lomé developed as a trading center in the 19th century under German colonial rule and became the capital of Togoland. After World War I it became part of French-administered Togo and remained the capital after independence in 1960. The population includes diverse ethnic groups, with Ewe speakers forming a major portion; French is the official language, with Ewe commonly used locally. Education institutions include the University of Lomé.
