Lokalisatiivikoja

Lokalisatiivikoja is a term used in linguistics to describe the set of locative morphemes that mark location, direction, or related spatial relations in Finnish and other Finnic languages. The term aggregates suffixes that attach to a noun stem to indicate where something is located, where it is moving to, or where it originates, and it often overlaps with what are traditionally called illative, inessive, elative, adessive, allative, ablative, essive, translative, and abessive forms.

In Finnish, lokalisatiivikoja are realized as postnominal suffixes, and their exact shape depends on vowel harmony, stem type, and phonological alternations. Common forms include the following endings: inessive -ssa/-ssä (talossa, in the house), elative -sta/-stä (talosta, out of the house), illative endings such as -oon/-öön (taloon) and -in (kaupunkiin), adessive -lla/-llä (talolla), allative -lle (talolle), ablative -lta/-ltä (talolta), essive -na/-nä (talona), translative -ksi (taloksi), and abessive -tta/-ttä (talotta, without a house). These forms may vary across dialects and can interact with consonant gradation or stem-final consonants.

Usage notes: lokalisatiivikoja encode static location, destination, or point of origin, and they often contrast with other case forms that express related meanings such as possession, manner, or temporal references.
