Loisteputkea

Loisteputkea is a Finnish term that translates to "fluorescent tube" in English. It refers to a type of gas-discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce light. Inside a sealed glass tube, there is a low-pressure mercury vapor and an inert gas, typically argon. The inner surface of the tube is coated with a phosphorescent powder. When an electric current passes through the mercury vapor, it emits ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV light then strikes the phosphorescent coating, causing it to glow and emit visible light.

Fluorescent tubes were widely used for general lighting in homes, offices, and industrial settings due to their energy efficiency compared to incandescent bulbs. They offered a longer lifespan and produced less heat. However, their popularity has declined in recent years with the advent and widespread adoption of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting, which is even more energy-efficient and offers greater durability and design flexibility.

Despite the rise of LEDs, loisteputkea can still be found in older installations. They are also sometimes used in specific applications where their particular light characteristics are desired, or in areas where retrofitting to LED would be cost-prohibitive. Disposal of old fluorescent tubes requires care due to the presence of mercury, and specialized recycling programs are often available.
