Lohkolämmittimiä

Lohkolämmittimiä, often referred to as engine block heaters, are devices used to preheat the engine block of a vehicle, typically in cold climates. Their primary function is to raise the temperature of the engine's coolant and oil before the engine is started. This preheating offers several advantages, including easier engine starting, reduced wear and tear on engine components during cold starts, and faster cabin heating.

The most common type of lohkolämmitin is an electric immersion heater. This heater is installed directly into the engine's coolant jacket, usually in a freeze plug or a dedicated port. When plugged into a standard electrical outlet, the heating element within the lohkolämmitin heats the surrounding coolant. This warmed coolant then circulates through the engine block, transferring heat to the oil and other components.

Another type is an engine block heater that heats the oil directly, though these are less common. There are also air heaters, which preheat the air entering the engine, but the term lohkolämmitin most often refers to coolant heaters.

The use of lohkolämmittimiä is particularly prevalent in Nordic countries and other regions with prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures. They are typically activated several hours before the vehicle is needed, ensuring the engine is sufficiently warm for operation. Many modern vehicles integrate these heaters with timers or remote control systems for convenience. The energy consumption is generally modest, and they are considered an effective way to mitigate the challenges of starting and operating vehicles in extreme cold.
