Lobachevskij
Lobachevskij, also spelled Lobachevsky, was a Russian mathematician who made significant contributions to non-Euclidean geometry. Born in 1793 in the village of Nizhny Novgorod, Lobachevskij was the first to develop a coherent theory of hyperbolic geometry, a non-Euclidean geometry where the parallel postulate of Euclidean geometry does not hold. His work, published in 1829 and 1835, was initially met with skepticism and rejection by the mathematical community. However, it later gained recognition and is now considered a cornerstone of modern geometry. Lobachevskij's work had a profound impact on the development of mathematics and laid the groundwork for Einstein's theory of general relativity. He also made contributions to other areas of mathematics, including number theory and algebra. Lobachevskij died in 1856 in Kazan, Russia. His legacy continues to influence mathematical research and education today.
