They are broadly categorized into exocrine and endocrine glands. Exocrine glands secrete their products into ducts that lead to a body surface or cavity. Another way to classify glands is by their structure. Simple glands have a single duct, while compound glands have branched ducts. The secretory portion of simple glands can be tubular, alveolar (acinar), or tubuloalveolar. Compound glands also exhibit these secretory unit shapes. This structural classification helps in understanding the gland's complexity and potential secretion volume.
