Liuskajärjestelmä

Liuskajärjestelmä refers to a geological formation characterized by layered rocks, specifically shale and slate. These rock types are sedimentary in origin, meaning they were formed from the accumulation and cementation of mineral or organic particles. Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed primarily of clay minerals. Slate is a metamorphic rock derived from shale or mudstone, where the original clay minerals have recrystallized under heat and pressure, resulting in a finer, more fissile (easily split) structure.

The characteristic layering, or foliation, in these rocks is a key feature of the liuskajärjestelmä. This foliation allows the rock to split into thin, flat sheets. This property has made slate, in particular, a historically important building material, used for roofing, flooring, and decorative purposes.
