The choice of solvent is critical and depends on the specific thermoplastic being joined, as it must effectively dissolve or swell the material without causing degradation.

The process typically involves applying the solvent to one or both surfaces to be joined. This can be done by brushing, dipping, or using a capillary-action technique with a wick. After a brief period to allow the solvent to act, the parts are brought together and held under pressure for a sufficient time to allow the solvent to evaporate and the polymer chains to interdiffuse and re-entangle. Clamping or fixturing is often used to maintain alignment and apply the necessary pressure during the bonding phase.
