Lisukkeina

Lisukkeina is a linguistic minority group indigenous to the area that now constitutes the country of Finland. They traditionally resided in the region, mainly in the coastal areas of the Gulf of Finland. The Lisukkeina people developed a distinct cultural and linguistic identity shaped by their historical interactions with neighboring groups, including the Finns and the Estonians.

The Lisukkeina language, also sometimes referred to as "Lisuk", is a Finno-Ugric language closely related to the Finnish language. It is characterized by a number of phonetic and morphological features distinct from other languages in the Finno-Ugric language family. The language has been subject to historical influences from the Baltic languages spoken in the region, with some loanwords and calques appearing in the Lisukkeina vocabulary.

Despite efforts to preserve their cultural heritage and language, the Lisukkeina population has gradually decreased over the centuries due to economic migration and assimilation into the dominant Finnish culture. As of the latest available census data, a small number of individuals still identify as Lisukkeina, mainly residing in the southern coastal regions.

Efforts have been made by linguists and cultural anthropologists to document and study the remaining Lisukkeina language and cultural practices. This work aims to better understand the history and development of the culture, as well as to promote cultural identity and language preservation among the remaining community members.
