LiquidLiquidAbscheider is a class of separation equipment designed to separate two immiscible liquid phases with distinct densities. The device relies on gravity-induced settling and interfacial coalescence to form a continuous layer of one phase that can be withdrawn, while the other phase is removed from an opposite outlet. Efficiency depends on liquid densities, interfacial tension, flow rate, and the presence of coalescing aids or internal structures.

Typical structures include an inlet distributor to promote even flow, a settling or separation zone where the denser phase collects, and an outlet arrangement with a weir or pump to withdraw the continuous phase and an opposite outlet for the dispersed phase. Many designs incorporate demister pads, lamella plates, or other coalescing media to enhance phase separation and reduce entrainment. Level control keeps the interface stable and minimizes crossover between outlets. Some configurations use multiple stages or vertical versus horizontal orientations to match process requirements.

Applications are common in chemical processing, petroleum refining, and wastewater treatment, where oil–water or organic–aqueous mixtures must be separated for product quality or environmental compliance. They are also used in solvent recovery, dairy and food processing, and other industries dealing with immiscible liquid streams.

Limitations include sensitivity to emulsions, which can hinder coalescence and require demulsification steps; high-viscosity mixtures slow separation; and small density differences reduce separation efficiency. Proper design, surface treatment, and process control are essential to achieve reliable performance.
