Lipidibilayerin

Lipidibilayerin is a term used in theoretical discussions to designate a hypothetical amphipathic molecule that associates with lipid bilayers. In proposed models it partitions into cellular membranes, adopting orientations that place hydrophobic elements within the lipid core and hydrophilic regions near the aqueous interfaces. Depending on its exact chemistry, lipidibilayerin may behave as a small peptide, a lipid-like compound, or a synthetic amphipathic molecule able to insert into membranes without spanning the bilayer.

In structural proposals, lipidibilayerin is described as possessing an amphipathic motif, such as an alpha-helix or beta-strand with one face hydrophobic and the opposite face hydrophilic. This arrangement would enable shallow insertion into the outer leaflet or partial penetration into the bilayer, potentially forming transient associations with other lipids or proteins. Some speculative scenarios allow for dimerization or oligomerization to alter local curvature or create transient conduits.

Hypothetical roles include modulation of membrane fluidity and thickness, sensing or inducing curvature, organizing membrane microdomains, or facilitating vesicle fusion and fission. Because the concept is not established in biology, reported occurrences are limited to theoretical papers or engineered model systems in synthetic biology studies.

Research status: evidence for naturally occurring lipidibilayerin is lacking, and experimental verification remains challenging. Valid approaches include reconstitution into liposomes or supported bilayers, spectroscopy of membrane order, and high-resolution imaging of artificial membranes.
