Lipiddominant

Lipiddominant refers to a characteristic of certain biological molecules or structures where lipids are the primary or most abundant component. This term is often used in the context of cell membranes, where the lipid bilayer forms the fundamental structure. In this case, the lipid bilayer is composed of phospholipids, which have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail, arranging themselves to form a barrier between the aqueous environments inside and outside the cell. Proteins are also present within cell membranes, but the membrane's basic integrity and function as a selective barrier are dictated by the lipid component.

The term can also be applied to lipoproteins, which are complexes of lipids and proteins that transport fats in the bloodstream. Lipoproteins are classified by their lipid density, and a lipiddominant lipoprotein would have a higher proportion of lipids compared to proteins. This influences their size, density, and role in lipid metabolism and transport. For example, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered more lipiddominant than high-density lipoproteins (HDL).
