Linsenfehlern

Linsenfehler, also known as lens aberrations, are optical imperfections that prevent a lens from perfectly focusing light rays to a single point. These errors can cause a distortion of the image, leading to issues like blurriness, color fringing, or warped shapes. Several types of lens aberrations exist, each with a distinct effect on the image.

Spherical aberration occurs when light rays striking different parts of a spherical lens are refracted at slightly different angles, resulting in a loss of sharpness. Chromatic aberration arises from the fact that different colors of light have different wavelengths and are therefore refracted at different angles by the lens material. This leads to color fringing around objects, particularly at high contrast edges.

Other common lens aberrations include coma, which causes off-axis points of light to appear as comet-like streaks; astigmatism, where light rays in perpendicular planes focus at different points, leading to a loss of detail in certain orientations; and field curvature, where the focal plane is not flat, causing the edges of an image to be out of focus if the center is sharp, or vice-versa. Distortion, another type of aberration, affects the straightness of lines in an image, causing barrel distortion (lines bulge outwards) or pincushion distortion (lines bend inwards).

Lens designers employ various techniques to minimize these errors, such as using multiple lens elements made of different types of glass, shaping lens surfaces in complex ways, or using specialized coatings. While completely eliminating all aberrations is often impossible, modern lenses are engineered to significantly reduce their impact, leading to sharper and more accurate image reproduction.
