Linhs

Linhs are a type of mythical creature originating from Vietnamese folklore, often described as supernatural beings with human-like appearances but possessing extraordinary abilities. The term "linh" translates to "spirit" or "ghost" in Vietnamese, and these entities are deeply embedded in the country's cultural and religious traditions.

In Vietnamese mythology, linhs are typically categorized into benevolent and malevolent spirits. Benevolent linhs, such as the *Thần Linh* (spirit deities) or *Cổ Linh* (ancient spirits), are often associated with nature, ancestors, or protective forces. They may be invoked for guidance, blessings, or to ward off misfortune. Malevolent linhs, on the other hand, are often linked to curses, hauntings, or supernatural misfortunes, such as the *Ma Linh* (ghosts) or vengeful spirits.

Linhs are frequently depicted in Vietnamese literature, art, and festivals. During the *Tết Nguyên Đán* (Lunar New Year) and other traditional celebrations, offerings are made to appease or honor these spirits to ensure harmony and prosperity. Some linhs are believed to inhabit specific locations, such as trees, rivers, or ancestral homes, and disturbing them may invite bad luck or supernatural retribution.

In modern Vietnamese culture, the belief in linhs persists in rural areas, where folk practices and animistic traditions remain influential. While urbanization has diminished some supernatural beliefs, linhs continue to appear in contemporary media, including films, television, and folklore collections, reflecting their enduring cultural significance. The concept of linhs also intersects with Buddhism and Confucianism, where spirits are seen as part of a broader cosmic order governing human existence.
